It's as easy as following our simple DIY recipes and taking notes of the raw ingredients you need. We've sourced them all for you ready to buy – in plastic free packaging of course!
Jayne has been playing around with and making her own natural beauty potions since developing skin sensitivity as a hairdresser. She wants to share her love of fragrant essential oils and healing plant oils, and show you just how easy it is to build your own simple a clean beauty routine, once you know how.
• Start by downloading a recipe (or reading a DIY recipe blog post).
• Take note of the ingredients you'll need for your creation and find them below, along with any essential oils or containers you might need.
(The most sustainable way to store your potions, of course, is in clean empty containers that you already have at home!).
natural plant-based ingredients we love to make with

Apricot Kernel Oil
Great for dry, damaged hair & scalps
Lightweight with a relatively greasy texture, due to the high content of rich unsaturated fatty acids – so less is more. Moisturising and antioxidant. Penetrates the hair cuticle to nourish and protect it from within.
Anti-inflammatory so it soothes an irritated scalp and it protects the hair follicles. For scalp care – apply weekly, leave in for 20 minutes, then shampoo out.
Argan Oil (deodorised)
A brilliant all-rounder for hair & skin
A mid-weight oil rich essential fatty acids, vitamin E and squalene, this oil from Morocco is referred to as liquid gold. Suitable for all hair types but best for adding shine to dry and dull hair.
Use all over the body, and as weekly as a hair mask to moisturise hair and add shine – apply to the lengths and either leave in or shampoo out.
Camellia Tea Oil
Great for fine hair
A light-weight oil that is high in unsaturated fatty acids (90%) that prevents dehydration and nourishes the hair.
It creates a protective barrier while adding shine. For coarser hair types, use a few drops of camellia tea oil as a leave-in oil in the ends.
Castor Oil
Very thick and great for dry hair & scalp
Castor Oil has a thick, honey-like texture and is renowned for its super nourishing and strengthening virtues for the hair, eyebrows, eyelashes and nails. Best suited to very dry, curly, coily or frizzy hair as it adds strength and shine.
To stimulate hair follicles for hair growth, and purify the scalp, apply to the scalp once or twice a week. Leave in for about 30 minutes and then shampoo out.
Cosmetic Clays
Exceptionally rich in minerals, cosmetic Clays work wonders on skin and scalp by cleansing, detoxifying and gently exfoliating.
They help to regenerate the skin, absorb excess oils and cleanse gently. We use French Green Clay in our award-winning shampoo bars and it can be used for clay face masks and when bathing, too.
Flower Waters
Also known as Hydrosols or Hydrolats, Flower Waters are a by-product of the essential oil making process.
When plant matter goes through a steam distillation process to produce an essential oil, the steam condensation is collected, and bottled as a hydrosol, or flower water.
They have similar properties and scent to the essential oil, but a lot lighter. They can be used anywhere water is normally used in a DIY beauty recipe – for face masks, leave-in conditioners, hair spritzes etc.
Fractionated Coconut Oil
A great, lightweight all-rounder
Fractionated coconut oil is modified coconut oil that stays liquid and odourless. It is smoothing, softening and strengthening when used in the hair, penetrating furthest into the cuticle to nourish it from within.
When used on the skin it is more slowly absorbed and forms a protective barrier. It's a great non-greasy oil for hair, face and body.
Grapeseed Oil
Very light and great for fine hair
Easily absorbed in to hair and skin, with high levels of vitamin E, Omega 6 and antioxidants. It's great for smoothing fine hair without weighing it down, and for moisturising oily or sensitive skin.
Very versatile – it's a great massage oil, scalp oil and leave-in oil for the ends of 'fluffy' hair (just a few drops).
Himalayan Pink Salt
Full of minerals
Himalayan Pink Salt is a natural rock salt containing over 80 minerals. Its health benefits and high magnesium levels make it great for making bath salts.
Adds beachy volume and texture to your hair when used in our sea salt spray for hair.
Jojoba Oil
Mid-weight oil that mimics sebum
Recommended for oily hair, scalps and skin due to it's closeness to the natural oils (sebum) that our bodies produce. This oil (technically a wax) can help to regulate sebum by slowing oil production.
A relatively dry oil that easily sinks in. Great for dry hair as dehydration can be attributed to not enough sebum travelling down the hair. Also adds shine and helps to define curls.
Mango Butter
A rich but non-greasy butter
High in unsaturated fatty acids, it is antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and moisturising. It lightly coats the hair fibre to soften it without weighing it down.
Mango Butter is a non-comedogenic oil, making it perfect for all hair and skin types – oily, combination, normal or dry.
Olive Oil + Olive Wax
Mid-weight, all-round moisturisers
Softening, rich in antioxidants and highly nourishing, Olive Oil (and Olive Wax) has been used in for beauty purposes for centuries.
With benefits for every type of skin and hair, from sensitive to dry and coarse – antioxidant, restorative, anti-inflammatory, strengthening, softening, soothing, protective, emollient, nourishing and calming.
Vegetable Glycerine
Hydrates, softens and adds shine
A very effective natural humectant, meaning it pulls water from the air to hydrate hair and skin, making them soft and supple.
A colourless odourless, water soluble liquid, Vegetable Glycerine can be used as an ingredient in water-based hair care creations to improve softness, shine, manageability and strength.
